about us

Mollusc are a two-man team, Anthony Smith and Jonathan Maris, in business since 1993, writing and recording music and sound design tracks for television, film, advertising and radio.

Anthony read Modern Languages at Cambridge.

Jonathan studied music and fine art at Brighton.

Initially we both worked in other areas of the film industry, Anthony as a video director for pan-European clients, and Jonathan in art departments and as a storyboard artist.

This grounding provided a great knowledge of how the industry works and some pretty useful contacts.

Music was the ambition, though.

Anthony had commissioned music by other composers and Jonathan had played and recorded with bands for years, demoing also for a few commercials. It seemed natural the two of us should combine forces to produce sync to picture music ourselves.

The first commission soon followed and before long, our music had pretty much taken over from our other work.

Since then Mollusc has produced work that is heard on shows around the globe.

Pick a country and you can be sure that, whether from National Geographic documentaries broadcast in say, Argentina, or maybe BBC World Service idents in Kenya and Tanzania, or to Grand Designs in Britain, our music will feature.

Using ftp means that Mollusc can liaise easily with clients across different timezones.

The 40+ documentaries scored for Nat Geo in  Washington DC attest to this: the clients send us the pictures as mp4's; we write and master the work as AIF or WAV files to return via the same route.

Distance really is no object.

We work from our studio in the West End of London:

Logic Pro 7, Apple G5, Metric Halo i/o take care of the technical bit and a menagerie of guitars, keyboards, samples, mandolins, whistles, bells ...you name it, help provide the music. We also have long-standing relationships with other musicians (singers, woodwind, strings ...) for specialist jobs.
